Barrou in the Loire Valley
is our home village and we are only 7 km away - far
enough so as not to be pests but close enough to be of
assistance if needed. Our village sits by the river Creuse on the D750 road between Descartes and Yzeures-sur-Creuse.
We have a lovely little church in which we have been lucky
enough to attend our French neighbours
Barrou has a restaurant/bar, boulangerie
(baker) boucherie (butcher) and épicier (grocer) and
a post office.
The restaurant is typical of small villages of the region in that it also has a separate bar area where the locals meet over coffee or a glass of wine to discuss the events of the day.
Sandra and Willi serve traditional fare at good prices and is a good place to join the locals for lunch - you will not be disappointed. Self-service buffet for starters, main course, cheese board or a sweet for 12 euros. Local red wine, coffee
and bread are included in the price.Check
opening times, closed Sunday evenings
and all day Monday and it can vary with
the seasons you are best to book for
evening dining, more out of courtesy
There is an annual
local music festival held
in the village on the first Sunday of July. Always an
eclectic mix of artists. If you are in the area you
should give it a visit - always a unique experience!
There are many pleasant walks around the village and along the river. Plus in the house you will find guides for all the official walks for all the local villages.
On the way to nearby Lesigny at the bridge over the
Creuse, at 'Le bout du pont',
there is very popular 'beach' with
its own 'lifeguard' (during July & August) offering safe river swimming as well as a picnic area. There are also
swimming pools nearby in
Le Grand Pressigny
Nearby, Descartes kayak club will bring you upstream from where you make your way down river back to the club and your car. There a number of other locations here in the Loire
Valley where you can
Barrou is Chateau de la Guerche (5mins) which is worth a visit.
